The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, Australian Indigenous Studies and Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy have jointly identified a need for a Pre-Sustainability Programme that gives Indigenous people an alternative entry path to the Sustainable Development Programme and a chance to inform the debate about country management in Australia.

Applicants

The WANGKINY BOODJAR Pre-Sustainability Programme is a four-week intensive course designed to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for their first year in the Sustainable Development Programme.

Apply for the programme if:

  1. You are seeking to gain entry into the Murdoch University Sustainable Development Programme
  2. OR
  3. You are already a tertiary student and would like to enter the Murdoch University Sustainable Development Programme but are unsure as to whether it is the right choice for you.

Programme Details

The programme is designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the Sustainable Development Programme. Applicants will develop strategies and techniques to handle the pressures and routines of university studies. The programme offers an intensive pre-sustainability education and university orientation.

There will be a focus on small group workshops and tutorials. Lectures will be given by a range of staff from Murdoch University together with guest lecturers from government agencies and industry. The programme will also place an emphasis on university study skills - including writing, reporting and analytical skills.

The units and components of WANGKINY BOODJAR (Talking Country) will be:

  1. STUDY AND LIBRARY SKILLS - You will learn to draw on library resources and to think critically and creatively about sustainability. You will learn to present your ideas in reflective, formal and oral ways.
  2. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE - You will consider sustainability in your own life, culture and community.
  3. THEORY AND PRACTICE - You will explore key ideas and state-of-the-art practices in sustainable development.
  4. EXCURSIONS - You will visit various centres and sites that show-case or practice sustainable development, as well as cultural and historical places of interest.

Assessment

Assessment and review of progress in the programme will be continuous and will include a journal, an oral presentation and a report.

All students who meet the academic requirements of the programme will qualify for a place in Sustainable Development Program - Murdoch University. Alternatively, those applicants who do not meet the requirement will be given the option of entry into The Diploma in University Studies programme (bridging programme).

Entry Requirements

Interested people need to complete an application form and attend an informal interview.

There are no formal entry requirements. However to be able to complete the programme successfully it is recommended that you:

  1. Have undertaken some previous studies which can include bridging, orientation or preparatory courses, Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) or equivalent, degree or diploma courses, and TAFE studies;
  2. OR
  3. Have relevant work experience - for example employment in Aboriginal organisations such as Legal Services, Land Councils, or in the Public Service.

The programme is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The programme will be limited to 12 applicants.

This four week intense course is Abstudy approved and has no cost or fees !

Course Dates & Location

The programme will commence at the beginning of January of each year. The programme concludes just prior to the start of first semester. Exact dates are available from Kulbadri centre.

The programme will be held at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia. Murdoch is located about 15 kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District and 8 kilometres east of Fremantle.
