The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre and the Murdoch University School of Nursing has identified a need for a
Pre - Nursing Programme that gives Indigenous people alternative access to entrance in the School of Nursing
and a chance of succeeding in nursing studies.
Applicants
The KOORT MOODITJ Pre-Nursing Programme is a four-week intensive course designed to prepare Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander students for first year nursing Studies.
Apply for the programme if:
- You are seeking to gain entry into the Murdoch University School of Nursing to study for a nursing degree
(BN) leading to Registration with the Nurses Board of WA
OR
- You are already a tertiary student and would like to enter the Murdoch University School of Nursing but are
unsure as to whether it is the right choice for you.
Programme Details
The programme is designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the Nursing School.
Applicants will develop strategies and techniques to succeed in Nursing Studies. The programme offers an
intensive pre-nursing education and university orientation.
Teaching focuses on nursing knowledge, basic science, communication, problem solving and health mathematics.
There will be a focus on small group workshops and tutorials with lectures being conducted by staff from the Murdoch
University School of Nursing, Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre and distinguished guests.
The units and components of the KOORT MOODITJ Pre-Nursing Programme will be:
- STUDY & LIBRARY SKILLS - particular focus on written communication, mathematics and computing skills.
Also library skills necessary for Nursing research will be taught.
- EXCURSION & PRATICAL EXERCISES - students will visit Scitech and a Nursing museum.
- NURSING SKILLS AND HISTORY - students will be introduced to the history of nursing and learn
some of the day to day activities of the professional nurse
Assessment
Assessment and review of progress in the programme will be continuous and include written exercises,
assignments and science and clinical examinations.
All students who meet the academic requirements of the programme will qualify for a place in first year Nursing in the
School of Nursing - Murdoch University. Alternatively, those applicants who do not meet the requirement will be given
the option of entry into The Diploma in University Studies programme (bridging programme).

Entry Requirements
Interested people need to complete an application form and attend an informal interview.
There are no formal entry requirements. However to be able to complete the programme successfully it is recommended that you:
- Have undertaken some previous studies which can include bridging, orientation or preparatory
courses, Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) or equivalent, degree or diploma courses, and TAFE
studies;
OR
- Have relevant work experience - for example employment in aged care.
If you are unsure of your suitability for the programme please contact the staff of the Kulbardi
Aboriginal Centre or staff of the School of Nursing.
Eligibility
The programme is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The programme will be limited to 20 applicants.
Course Dates
The programme will commence at the beginning of January of each year. The programme concludes just prior to the start of first semester.
Exact dates are available from the Kulbardi Centre.
Location
The programme will be held at Murdoch University, Peel Campus, Mandurah, Western Australia.
Mandurah is located about 70 kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District.
