The media have a particular importance for indigenous people. Radio, television and newspapers are vehicles for telling their stories, but more importantly they offer opportunities through employment for indigenous people to tell their stories themselves. The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre and the Murdoch University School of Media, Communications & Culture have created a Pre - Media Programme that gives Indigenous people an alternative pathway into university study in the field of media.

Applicants

The KULBARDI WANGKINY Pre-Media Programme is a four-week intensive course designed to prepare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for first year Media Studies.

Apply for the programme if:

  1. You are seeking to gain entry into the Murdoch University School of Media, Communications, Culture to study for either: Media Studies, Multimedia, Communication & Cultural Studies, Mass Communication (Public Relations & Journalism) and/or Australian Indigenous Studies (AIS)
  2. OR
  3. You are already a tertiary student and would like to enter the Murdoch University School of Media, Communications, Culture but are unsure as to whether it is the right choice for you.

Programme Details

The programme is designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the School of Media, Communications & Culture. Applicants will develop strategies and techniques to handle the pressures and routines of Media, Communication or Cultural Studies. The programme offers an intensive pre-media education as well as orientation to university study.

There will be a focus on small group workshops and tutorials with staff from the Murdoch University and distinguished guests conducting lectures. The programme will also place an emphasis on production skills - including individual & group projects.

The units and components of the KULBARDI WANGKINY Pre-Media Programme will be:

  • RADIO - incorporates such skills as: interviewing, writing for radio, radio in the field, radio editing and live studio broadcasting.
  • PRINT MEDIA - with an emphasis on "What's a Story", writing for print, interviewing, media ethics and media law and page production.
  • SCREEN & TELEVISION - highlights and exposes the student to areas such as: film content, visual language, editing, the TV studio, script writing, and studio production.
  • MULTI-MEDIA - explores: digital media, digital processes, digital imaging, basic web design, and coding technologies.
  • STUDY & LIBRARY SKILLS - focuses on university study and participation techniques, Aboriginal Media & Representation and computer principles.
  • EXCURSION & PRATICAL EXERCISES - students will visit a major media organisation as well as participate in group & individual activities.

Assessment

Assessment and review of progress in the programme will be continuous and include a written essay, production assignments, in-class participation and a final production project.

All students who meet the academic requirements of the programme will qualify for a place in an undergraduate degree in the School of Media, Communication & Culture - Murdoch University. Alternatively, those applicants who do not meet the requirement will be given the option of entry into The Diploma in University Studies programme (bridging programme).

Entry Requirements

Interested people need to complete an application form and attend an informal interview.

There are no formal entry requirements. However to be able to complete the programme successfully it is recommended that you:

  1. Have undertaken some previous studies which can include bridging, orientation or preparatory courses, Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) or equivalent, degree or diploma courses, and TAFE studies;
  2. OR
  3. Have relevant work experience - for example employment in Aboriginal and/or Media organisations involved with print-media, communications, multi-media and/or production.

If you are unsure of your suitability for the programme please contact the staff of the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre or staff of the School of Media, Communication & Culture.

The programme is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The programme will be limited to 12 applicants.

This four week intense course is Abstudy approved and has no cost or fees !

Course Dates & Location

The programme will commence at the beginning of January of each year. The programme concludes just prior to the start of first semester. Exact dates are available from Kulbadri centre.

The programme will be held at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia. Murdoch is located about 15 kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District and 8 kilometres east of Fremantle.
