The Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre and the Murdoch University School of Law has identified a need for
a Pre - Law Programme that gives Indigenous people alternative access to entrance in the Law School
and a chance of succeeding in Law studies.
Applicants
The KOORA KUDIDJ Pre-Law Programme is a four-week intensive course designed to prepare Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander students for first year Law Studies.
Apply for the programme if:
- You are seeking to gain entry into the Murdoch University School of Law to study for either the
Law (LLB) Degree or Batchelor of Legal Studies (BLS) degree;
OR
- You are already a tertiary student and would like to enter the Murdoch University School of Law
but are unsure as to whether it is the right choice for you.
Programme Details
The programme is designed to assess the suitability of applicants wishing to study in the Law School.
Applicants will develop strategies and techniques to handle the pressures and routines of Law Studies. The programme offers an intensive pre-law education and university orientation.
There will be a focus on small group workshops and tutorials with lectures being conducted by staff
from the Murdoch University School of Law and distinguished guests. The programme will also place an
emphasis on university study skills - including legal research and writing skills.
The units and components of the KOORA KUDIDJ Pre-Law Programme will be:
- AUSTRALIAN LEGAL SYSTEM - includes such areas as Parliament and the Courts, Constitutional Law,
and Aboriginal Legal Issues, such as Native Title and The Stolen Generations.
- CIVIL LAW - with an emphasis on Property Law, Contract Law, Discrimination, Environmental Law, and
other special topics.
- STUDY & LIBRARY SKILLS - particular focus on legal research methods, formal writing, law report
writing and computer techniques.
- EXCURSION & PRATICAL EXERCISES - students will visit various Law organisations and associations
as well cultural and historical places of interest.
Assessment
Assessment and review of progress in the programme is continuous and includes written exercises,
assignments and an examination.
All students who meet the academic requirements of the programme will qualify for a place in first
year Law in the School of Law - Murdoch University. Alternatively, those applicants who do not meet
the requirement will be given the option of entry into the Legal Studies programme, another non-quoted
programme or The Diploma in University Studies programme (bridging programme).
Entry Requirements
Interested people need to complete an application form and attend an informal interview.
There are no formal entry requirements. However to be able to complete the programme successfully
it is recommended that you:
- Have undertaken some previous studies which can include bridging, orientation or preparatory
courses, Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) or equivalent, degree or diploma courses, and TAFE studies;
OR
- Have relevant work experience - for example employment in Aboriginal organisations such as
Legal Services, Land Councils, or in the Public Service.
If you are unsure of your suitability for the programme please contact the staff of the Kulbardi
Aboriginal Centre.
The programme is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The programme will be
limited to 20 applicants.
This four week intense course is Abstudy approved and has no cost or fees !
Course Dates & Location
The programme will commence at the beginning of January of each year. The programme concludes just prior to the start of first semester. Exact dates are available from Kulbadri centre.
The programme will be held at Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia. Murdoch is located about
15 kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District and 8 kilometres east of Fremantle.
