The Kulbardi Aboriginal Tertiary Entrance Course (KATEC) is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to undertake university undergraduate degree studies or seek employment. On completion of the ONE YEAR course students graduate with a Diploma in University Studies and are guaranteed an offer in an unquoted undergraduate programme of their choice.

KATEC has a core focusing on skills necessary for successful university study and which are useful for many areas of employment. These units cover writing and computing in the context of enhancing Aboriginal identity. Students also undertake elective units in such diverse areas as Nyungar Culture, Media, Education, and Science.

Entry is open to people who will be at least 16 years of age in the year of study. Selection into the course is not based on previous schooling and prospective students are not required to complete a written test to gain entry.

The programme can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and students can commence the course in either February or July of each year. There are NO HECS FEES for this course.

Unit Descriptions

KAC061 Foundations of Formal Writing
This unit is designed to offer students an introduction to the discipline and practice of formal writing. Students will be encouraged to explore a wide range of writing styles and genre, with an emphasis on developing individual interests and talents. Weekly workshops will include writing exercises and feedback, and discussions of course readings. The focus will be on intensive writing practice, basic research methods and explorations of the drafting process.

KAC062 Foundations of Information Technology
This unit introduces students to the use of a word processing software package on a personal computer. Students are also introduced to the Internet as a study and research tool. At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Use various components of a personal computer system.
  • Use the word processor in various stages of writing.
  • Retrieve information over the Internet.

KAC063 Mathematical Functions and Modelling
This unit introduces students to mathematical modelling and functions through practical applications. Investigative and exploratory activities will encourage students to become actively involved in the learning of mathematics. This unit is essential for students who wish to undertake further studies in science or business.

KAC064 Foundations of the Media
This unit will introduce you to the three facets of Media: Multimedia, Film and Radio. The Multimedia component introduces multimedia as a combination of text, graphics, and the Internet and World Wide Web. The Film component will involve the theories of film production and camera operation. The Radio component will teach you basic radio desk principles and interview techniques utilizing portable equipment.

KAC067 Foundations of Nyungar Culture
This unit provides an overview of Nyungar cultures and life, within the South-West of Western Australia. This unit offers a perspective and interpretation of Nyungar culture and history. An important aspect of this unit is the learning of the Nyungar language.

KAC068 Orientation Science A
This unit is designed for students who have little academic knowledge in the area of science. Students will be introduced to science through practical activities in the laboratory and field studies.

KAC069 Orientation Science B
This unit is an introduction to the study of chemistry for those students with little or no background in this subject. On completion of this unit students should have a good understanding of elements and compounds, mass mole calculations, structure and bonding, solids, liquids and gases and energy in chemical reactions. Students will also be introduced to equilibrium in chemical reactions, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction reactions.

KAC070 Introduction to the Practice of Teaching
This unit looks at the processes of 'learning' and 'teaching' in classrooms. The main theme will be; what kinds of things do teachers need to think about, take into account and do when they teach children? Students will visit one school five or six times during the semester, shadowing a teacher or Aboriginal Educator. During these visits students will also work with an individual child or small group of children under the guidance of a teacher or an Aboriginal Education Worker. They will keep a journal, which documents their work with the child or small group. Within this unit, career paths in Education will be discussed.

KAC071 Study of Society and Politics
The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the study of society, its institutions and structures. This will include issues such as the family and networks of friends, the political system, work, leisure, tourism, immigration, ethnicity and race. Students will be encouraged to use their everyday experience of Australian society and politics along with the tools of inquiry to begin looking beyond the taken-for-granted views that are held. A key objective of the unit will be to introduce students to the key terminology used to represent and understand the dynamics of society so as to prepare them for entry into first year units in Sociology, Politics and Tourism.

KAC073 University Studies
This unit is designed to encourage students to develop their learning and language skills through independent learning. Issues covered include; time management, effective study methods, project planning, research, writing and evaluation, laboratory preparation, exam preparation, question preparation and assistance with any other issues chosen by the class.

KAC075 Foundations of Academic Writing
This unit is designed to equip students with the necessary writing skills to enable them to navigate university demands of essays, papers, reports and related forms. It is the building of the previous unit Foundations of Formal Writing. The unit teaches students to develop and further enhance their skills for University in research, argumentative, and textual analysis writing

TLC020 Introduction to University Learning
This unit introduces students to university scholarship. It aims to develop students' skills as university learners by integrating their practice of fundamental learning skills with the study of concepts from various disciplines. It also aims to inform students' understanding of themselves as university learners generally, as well as their chosen discipline. The theoretical basis of the unit uses the concepts of the 'self' and of 'culture' to clarify the relationship between the learner and the university's requirements and expectations of students.
